Will you accept applications for PGY 2 residents?

The Psychiatry Residency at the ʼһ – Milwaukee accepts applications for Post-Graduate Year 1 and 2 through ERAS. Visit the ERAS website for more information.

How many letters of recommendation do you require?

We prefer four letters of recommendation (LOR), and require a minimum of three LOR to be considered for an invitation.

Do you have a requirement on who writes the letters?

The most useful LORs are from someone with whom you’ve worked clinically, who can comment on your interpersonal skills, professionalism, care for patients, etc. If you have completed any previous training or left another program, we do require a LOR from your previous program director. We do not require a letter from the chairperson of your department.

What parts of the application need to be in before I will be considered for an interview?

We require the application, personal statement, Step 1 or COMLEX 1 and three letters of recommendation before being considered for an interview.

Do you need to have Step 2 in before applying?

No. We require USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX 1 to be considered for an interview. USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX 2 are required before ranking.

When will applicants be invited?

We will begin reviewing applications on ERAS at the end of September. Invitations will begin soon after on a rolling basis. Given the time we put into the application review, we expect that we will continue to send invitations throughout November with some into December. Applicants who are waitlisted or not selected for interviews will be notified through ERAS. If you have not heard from us, please check that all documentation has been downloaded onto ERAS. We may still be reviewing your application.

When will you start interviewing applicants?

We expect to start the interviewing process in October.

Do you consider International Medical Graduates?

We do consider and accept qualified IMGs. We prefer to see that applicants have had prior psychiatric and medical experience in the US. As with all of our applicants, evidence of a passion for a career in psychiatry and a social conscience are also valued.

Do you sponsor Visas?

We do not accept visas.

Do you offer observerships?

Our department does not offer observerships, externships or pre-match positions.

Will you participate in the supplemental application through ERAS?

Yes, we will be participating in the supplemental application and will make note of applicants' experiences, geographic preferences and program preferences when making decisions about inviting applicants to interview.
