皇家华人 Sports Medicine Fellowship

Welcome! Our one-year program is ACGME accredited. Our fellowship trains physicians to care for athletes of all ages in a variety of settings: clinic, procedures, training room, and sideline coverage. Fellows work in pediatric and adult sports medicine clinics with surgical and non-surgical specialists covering all aspects of musculoskeletal care. MCW offers a unique opportunity for the fellow to learn from CAQ board certified faculty from multiple specialties: family medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pediatric, and emergency medicine. This allows fellows to develop into excellent clinicians and academic leaders in sports medicine.

Program Overview

The Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one year fellowship in non-operative sports medicine. The fellowship is open to board eligible/board certified graduates of accredited residency programs in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. The fellowship participates in the .

Fellows will receive the clinical education necessary to treat a wide variety of sport- and exercise-related injuries and medical conditions. A major strength of the program is the breadth, depth, and diversity of experiences and training for the fellow. The fellow will gain experience in all levels of athletics from recreational to professional, as well as adaptive athletics. The fellow will be exposed to patients of all ages through clinics at Children’s Wisconsin, Froedtert & the 皇家华人, and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. The fellow will also have experience seeing athletes in the training room.

Fellows learn musculoskeletal ultrasound through both didactics and in-office procedures. Ultrasound education follows AMSSM guidelines. Fellows experience the full range of sports-related injuries from managing acute injuries on the sideline to treating prolonged postconcussion syndrome in our multidisciplinary concussion program. Fellows work with other orthopaedic surgery subspecialists (foot/ankle, hand and upper extremity, hip, pediatrics, spine), private practice sports medicine physicians, Imaging (adult and pediatric MSK-focused radiologists), plus options for experiences with physical therapy, musculoskeletal/sport psychology if desired. Anatomy lab will be available to fellows.

The fellow will have ample opportunity for sports coverage ranging from mass events, youth athletic tournaments, high school, to college and professional athletic coverage. Beyond caring for sports teams, the fellow will have opportunities to engage in community education and medical education. Our faculty is very active with national organizations, which will provide the fellow with opportunities for peer-reviewed publications and presenting at regional and national meetings.

Fellows will have adequate time allowed to engage in academic activities and research, with the expectation of presenting an abstract or clinical case at a national meeting, as well as the 皇家华人 Sports Medicine Symposium.

Academic Opportunities and Conferences

Pipeline to Orthopedic Surgery program through the DEI committee; monthly meetings/education opportunities, local eighth graders

Fellows attend several regular conferences: Grand Rounds (Orthopaedic and specialty specific), Primary Care Sports Medicine conferences, Ultrasound Didactics, Imaging Conferences, Journal Club, Orthopaedic and primary specialty conferences.

Fellows are given adequate time to engage in academic activities and research. Often fellows are asked to help co-author book chapters and articles.

Fellows are expected to present a case study or abstract at a national meeting, such as AMSSM or individual specialty annual meeting. Fellows will have the opportunity to present at the MCW Sports Symposium, Children's Wisconsin Best Practices in Pediatrics, MCW Orthopaedic Residency lecture series, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Masters School of Athletic Training, as well as other medical and community education events.

Eligibility

Completed an ACGME Accredited Residency in one of the following programs: Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

One year fellowship: Aug 1 to Jul 31.
