Biography

Dr. Craig C. Young came to the department in 1992, following completion of a sports medicine fellowship with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation's section of sports medicine. He had completed a residency in 1991 in family medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

After graduating cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences in 1984, Dr. Young attended medical school at the University of California, San Diego. While there, he was a recipient of the 1987 Western Student Medical Research Forum Meritorious Research Award. He completed his medical doctorate in 1988, and in 1991, he received the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Resident Teacher Award. Dr. Young received the ʼһ Department of Family & Community Medicine Clinical Teaching Award in 1995, the Clinical Researcher of the Year Award in 1998, and Faculty Development Mentor Awards in 1997 & 1998. Dr. Young has been selected by his peers as a “Best Doctor in America” by the nationally known Best Doctor Inc® listing since 2001. He was elected president of the (AMSSM) in 2007-2008.

In addition to serving as medical director of sports medicine in the department, Dr. Young co-directs the Annual Sports Symposium at the ʼһ and serves on a variety of ʼһ and professional committees. He has been the director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship since 1993.

Dr. Young is a team physician for many professional athletic teams including the and the , He serves as company physician for the . Dr. Young also provides coverage for a wide range of sporting and special events, including serving as medical director for Lakefront Marathon and as a pool physician for the US Olympic Committee, which appointed him as a team physician for the 23rd Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy.

Dr. Young is board certified in Family Practice with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. He has been awarded fellowship in both the and the .

Research Interests

Dr. Young's research has been documented in a variety of published articles, abstracts, research conference talks, and educational presentations. He also shares his expertise with the general public on a regular basis through community lectures and presentations. He is the co-editor of the textbook, Netter’s Sports Medicine He is on the editorial boards of several journals including the and .
