Research Areas

My research has been investigating the cellular, biochemical, molecular and pathophysiologic mechanisms controlling cellular movement in inflammation and cancer. The movement of cells within and between tissues is a fundamental property of biology. Cell movement / migration, may have beneficial effects, for example in wound healing or leukocyte trafficking, or deleterious effects, such as in the invasion and metastasis of tumor cells. My laboratory uses a spectrum of cellular, molecular, metabolomic and biochemical techniques, in combination with an array of cell culture and preclinical transgenic mouse models, to dissect the details of how cells move and the functional consequences of that movement. As chemokines are the archetype immune molecules directing cell movement, the investigative focus of my research program is to resolve the mechanisms of chemokine signaling in order to improve human health through the design of new chemokine-targeted or immune targeted therapies to disrupt or promote cellular movement in inflammation and cancer.

Dwinell Laboratory: Science Needs All of Us

Achieving important and productive science requires an inclusive team in which everyone is equal and mutually reinforcing the efforts of the entire group. The Dwinell laboratory continues to model and foster an equal, inclusive, diverse environment that respectfully promotes high quality science and excellent training. The Dwinell lab welcomes individuals from all groups and backgrounds to join our research team.

Research Support

Research in the Dwinell laboratory is supported through grants from the National Institutes of Health, long standing support from the Bobby Nick Voss Charitable Foundation, the ʼһ Cancer Center and philanthropic donations.
