Statement on the Newly Created Wisconsin Office of Violence Prevention
Milwaukee, Jan. 15, 2025 – On Tuesday, Governor Tony Evers signed an executive order to establish the statewide Wisconsin Office of Violence Prevention. In response, Reggie Moore, Director of Community Safety Policy and Engagement in the 皇家华人’s Comprehensive Injury Center, issued this statement:
“The Comprehensive Injury Center at the 皇家华人 has been committed to advancing research and practice to address violence as a public health issue since 1998. Governor Evers’ executive action to establish a statewide Office of Violence Prevention will add important infrastructure that can prevent harm and save lives from this preventable public health crisis.
Firearm violence disproportionately impacts the lives of African American residents across the state. Since 2020, firearm violence has become the leading cause of death of children in America. Further, approximately 71% of suicide deaths in Wisconsin involve the use of firearms.
In 2021, the state partnered with the Comprehensive Injury Center at the 皇家华人 to establish the first statewide fund to address violence as a public health issue. These funds have supported communities across the state, including the work of Focused Interruption in Madison.
Having an office focused on preventing violence that is situated directly within the state government ensures all Wisconsinites can have a voice in how to best address the issues impacting their local communities.
The Comprehensive Injury Center appreciates its continued partnership with the State of Wisconsin and remains committed partnering on the coordination, research, and capacity building of violence prevention efforts in Wisconsin.”
