Biography

Matthew L. Hunsaker, MD, is the founding dean for the ʼһ (MCW) - Green Bay.  Dr. Hunsaker provides overall leadership and management of MCW’s regional campus in Green Bay.

As the founding dean of MCW-Green Bay, Dr. Hunsaker collaborates with the regional academic and health care partners that are key elements of the immersive teaching model of the program.

Dr. Hunsaker earned his Bachelor’s degree from Milligan College and received his medical degree from the University of Illinois - College of Medicine. He completed a residency in Family Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.  Dr. Hunsaker was a rural family medicine physician in southern Illinois practicing full-scope Family Medicine with Obstetrics.  He holds additional certificates in Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine and currently serves as a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration. He served on the faculty for more than a decade at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. While there, his duties included leadership of the Rural Medical Education Program, including managing a network of 25 affiliate hospital partners and 40 volunteer teaching physicians, and other administrative assignments. He has participated in all facets of medical student training.  He helped design and implement the U of I’s Rural Pharmacy Training Program in collaboration with the College of Pharmacy and integrated those students into the rural interdisciplinary health professions program. He is a tenured Professor of Family and Community Medicine.

For the past decade, Dr. Hunsaker has been a consultant for the development of rural medical education programs at medical schools across the country. In the past he has served as a U.S. State Department Fulbright Specialist in the areas of Medical Education and Primary Healthcare delivery.  He served as the lead consultant for the Princess of Naradhiwas University Faculty of Medicine located near the Thailand-Malaysia border, and has consulted and lectured in Asia, Africa and Europe in medical education.  He has authored several book chapters and a variety of publications in medical education.
