The Neuromuscular Section of the Department of Neurology offers a comprehensive diagnostic and clinical program for the evaluation and treatment of neuromuscular disorders at Froedtert Hospital and Children's Wisconsin, with an affiliated neuromuscular clinic at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. The Muscular Dystrophy Association sponsors an additional clinic for neuromuscular disorders covering both adults and children. This Section also supports research, including treatment trials, in neuromuscular disorders.
In addition to clinical evaluations, the EMG laboratory at Froedtert Hospital performs over 150 studies per month and the EMG laboratory at Children's Wisconsin performs 15-20 studies per month. Additional clinical neurophysiological testing includes an evoked potential laboratory (including intra-operative monitoring), quantitative/single fiber EMG, and a comprehensive autonomic testing laboratory that is unique in this region. Additional expertise is available in such diverse areas as quantitative sensory and strength testing, cranial and truncal somatosensory evoked potentials, and chemodenervation (botulinum toxin) therapy. We have a nationally certified muscle histology laboratory where over 250 nerve and muscle biopsies are prepared and interpreted each year.
