Biography
Dr. Wainaina’s clinical practice in perioperative medicine includes medical risk assessment, stratification and mitigation prior to surgery, as well as management of medical conditions after surgery with the goal of avoiding, or quickly correcting, any medical complications that may arise. This is always carried out in close partnership with patients’ surgeons, anesthesiologists and any other specialists whose expertise may be required. In addition, Dr. Wainaina also holds administrative responsibility for the Froedtert Hospital Pre-operative clinic as the medical director.
Within the division of infectious disease, Dr. Wainaina cares for patients with a wide range of infections that are difficult to treat, including HIV, bloodstream, post-surgical, orthopedic-device related and other bone and joint infections, among others. She applies a team-based approach that includes nurses, social workers, and an infectious disease pharmacist to provide care within the hospital and outside, ensuring that treatment arrangements are appropriate to each patient’s situation, effectively and safely delivered. She is also the medical director for the Froedtert Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship program in which she works with a team of infectious disease pharmacists to optimize the outcomes of patients in the hospital by advising on and facilitating use of the most appropriate antibiotic according to individual patient diagnosis.
Training the next generation of medical providers is a priority for Dr. Wainaina. She is involved in teaching at all levels and has received the Outstanding Medical Student Teacher award multiple times.
